ESL Standard 5: Student will demonstrate cross-cultural knowledge and understanding.

Objectives:
Student will be able to:
  • Identify and demonstrate the use of accurate present and future tenses of regular and irregular verbs in both oral and written language.
  • Identify and accurately use terms related to planning a party in both oral and written language.
  • Enhance their word processing and computer/Internet skills by using various technologies to complete the assignment.
  • Write, design, and format an e-invitation by using evite.com.
  • Use evite.com to organize an invitation by using, who, what, where, when, and why format.

Materials:

Anticipatory Set:
As students enter the classroom students will be prompted to tally their favorite type of party on the board this will open discussion about different types of parties.

Procedures:
Introduction (8 minutes)
  • Teacher welcomes student.
  • Teacher reviews verb tenses from sentences provided by students on their “exit ticket”.
  • Teacher will lead discussion about how parties can have different themes, and introduce American culture.
  • Teacher explains objectives of the lesson.
  • Students will be asked to get together with their partner.

Activity 1 (15 minutes) Invitation Creation
  • Students will be given a graphic organizer of information to include in the students’ Wiki pages.
  • Teacher will review the components of the graphic organizer and give examples.
  • Students will collaborate with his/her partner to determine the who, what, where, when, and why details of the party.
  • Students to create an invitation on evite.com.

Activity 2 (12 minutes) Menu brainstorming & Picture searching
  • Students will create a list of 7 to 10 foods that they will serve at this party. Foods must include 3 appetizers, 2 beverages, and 2-5 entrees.
  • Students will locate images of these foods using Flickr to save to their folder on their USB flash drive for later retrieval, to use for their menu for the guests to access.
  • Students will create an agenda on the graphic organizer, identifying the time of each of the events of the party.

Closure: (5 minutes)
  • Teacher explains that they will continue to work on their Wiki page in the next class.
  • Students will be asked to name a party from their culture as an "exit ticket" and to complete any missing information with his/her partner on the graphic organizers for homework.

Evaluation:
Assessment will be conducted during class by checking for appropriate responses to questions, and the students’ ability to complete the graphic organizer, create and send an electronic invitation, and find and save pictures of menu items. The students’ performance and participation will be monitored by the teacher, and assistance will be provided as needed. The students’ invitations will be reviewed for a grade.
